She’s twenty-something, she’s amounted to nothing, and she’s accidentally just made the mother of all promises.
Follow Lottie as she ill-advisedly becomes a surrogate for her sister, Freya, and her hapless brother-in-law, Rhuaridh. Now Lottie’s constantly tired, none of her clothes fit, and having a “belly buddy” is sort of ruining her life. But if that’s true, why is Lottie feeling the best she’s ever felt? Call it baby brain, call it Stockholm Syndrome, call it whatever you like, but suddenly Lottie is starting to feel strangely attached to her cargo. And besides, the child is legally hers until papers are signed postpartum, so she could change her mind at any time.
BAIRNS is a stretch-marked, tender, and “consistently laugh-out-loud funny” dramedy that asks how far you would go for your sibling.
Or your nibling?
Or… your child?
Exploring sisterhood, selflessness, selfishness and surrogacy, BAIRNS is part-stand up, part-theatre and “a wickedly funny piece that speaks to the heart”, (A Young(ish) Perspective).
It’s funny. It’s unapologetic. It’s “deliciously cutting”, (British Theatre Guide).
BAIRNS is a one-woman show written and performed by “emerging talent” Annie Davison, (Arifa Akbar, The Guardian).
Reviews
Comedy gold - A Youngish Perspective, ★★★★
This is a wickedly funny piece that speaks to the heart – no matter if you are a woman in her twenties, if you have a sister, if you have a baby or if you don’t - A Youngish Perspective, ★★★★
Davison’s performance style has a distinct stand-up quality to it – indeed, the jokes come thick and fast [...]. But the more serious moments of this piece is where Davison’s writing shines - A Youngish Perspective, ★★★★
A hugely accomplished writing debut by actor Annie Davison, Bairns hits the nails on the head time after time - British Theatre Guide, ★★★★
It is not often that the first performance of a new work is as assured as this. Davison is one to watch as performer and writer - British Theatre Guide, ★★★★
Consistently laugh-out-loud funny [...] deliciously cutting - British Theatre Guide, ★★★★
